There is a popular phrase, “you’re trying to fit a square peg into a round hole”. Ever heard of it?
I was recently interviewed by Dr. Shelley Plumb of Plumbtalk TV and we discussed this concept. Funny enough, I didn’t realize I would soon experience firsthand what that felt like.
We are all capable of doing so many things and doing them incredibly well, the challenge with that is, there are some things that are not the best and most productive use of our time or energy.
In the past few messages I have mentioned your MO or “modus operandi” and the conative part of your mind which is how you naturally “take action”, how you strive to do things and how to best allocate your mental energy in the process.
I recently had experience where I was completely conatively exhausted from striving or doing things for an entire day that was against my natural wiring.
Did I do a good job? Absolutely I did an amazing job.
Were the results rewarding? You bet. I felt a great sense of accomplishment having successfully completed my tasks.
Did I influence others in the process? Yes, and surprisingly so because I totally wasn’t expecting it to happen.
But by the end of the day, I could barely function. I was punchy, impatient, couldn’t focus, and didn’t have the energy to hold even a simple conversation. It was not the best use of my time and energy.
How many of us are experiencing this on a daily basis where you are striving so much at work and doing a great job, then you come home and fight to have the energy or patience for your family, friends or even to take care of things around the house.
Imagine what this conative stress and exhaustion is also doing to our children at the end of the day. They too are victims of having to follow a system that might be working against their conative talents and the way they are naturally wired to do things. It is a system trying to make them all round pegs when they are very square, or rectangular, or even hexagonal.
I never would have spotted this so blatantly if I didn’t have such a clear understanding of myself and my own conative nature to realize what was at play when I was working so diligently against my natural wiring.
